Learn the Legislative Process for Your State

Understanding Your State Government

USOLMT excels in collective action, standing out for our dedication to educating and involving you in the legislative process. In this section, you'll find essential information and resources that will guide you through legislative procedures and demonstrate their direct impact on your career.

Understanding Legislation

Legislative Procedures

  • Each state has systematic Legislative Procedures. Understanding those procedures is important as a professional in massage therapy.

  • When Bills are presented that will affect your career, it is imperative that you have a voice and know where and how to raise your concerns.

  • The NCSL (National Conference of State Legislatures) explains this process and educates citizens on political action.

  • You can register to receive notification in most states to stay up-to-date on bills regarding massage and bodywork, employment and labor law, and other areas of interest.

  • Some states allow citizens to appear in public hearings, and some states allow citizens to submit opinions directly to legislative committees. Educating yourself on these procedures is important.

  • Click "find my state legislative process" below to review how bills become laws in your home state.

Political Insight Center

find your representatives

Visit USA.gov to find your national, state, and local representatives.  From this site, simply enter your address for a list of names and contact information of those persons who represent you in government.  Reach out to your representatives any time to discuss massage therapy.  The best time to speak to your representatives is when they are out of session. This is the time to build relationships.  That way, when a bill or ordinance does arise that you are either for or against, your representatives will take your views into consideration.

track legislation

At USOLMT, we use Plural to track legislation related to massage therapy and other topics of interest such as wage and hour, labor, and employment law changes.  Plural also offers many free resources to assist you in learning how government works and how you can get involved.

You can also search and track federal legislation at Congress.gov.

research corporations

Another free resource that we use often is Open Corporates.  Use this free database to look up and examine incorporation documents and officers of legal entities across the country.

search terms

When you open the public database sites, you’ll be able to enter search terms and see results.

Some search terms you can use to find relevant industry information are “massage”, “physical therapy”, “spa”, “bodywork”, “human trafficking”, “prostitution”, “conditional use”, “establishment licensing”, “facility licensing”, “facilities licensing, “professional licensing” and even “occupational licensing”.

lmt body politic

USOLMT is always here to assist you with your needs related to issues with your state and local government and regulation related to your career.  We also recommend that you check out LMT Body Politic for additional assistance. This nonprofit was founded by a government relations expert with over 32 years in the profession, and often serves as a political consultant to our organization.
